Unattended Child

  1. Children under the age of five must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or caregiver while on Library premises.
  2. Parents, guardians or caregivers are responsible for providing supervision and care of their children while a child is on the premises of the Library.
  3. It is the responsibility of the parent, guardian or caregiver to monitor both the whereabouts and behaviour of their children while on Library premises.
  4. Library Staff cannot care for nor take responsibility for children left unattended at the Library.
  5.  Library Staff are entrusted to ensure that children are not left unattended in the Library.
  6. Parents, guardians and caregivers must inform themselves of scheduled library closing times, and be aware that children may sometimes need to leave the library unexpectedly – e.g. due to emergencies. It is the responsibility of parents, guardians or caregivers to let their children know what they should do if they must leave the library.
  7. Behavioral policies of the Whitecourt & District Public Library apply to children, both attended and unattended, while at the Library.
  8. When children are left without adequate supervision, Library Staff will take appropriate action, including attempting to contact the child’s family, Child and Family Services or the RCMP for assistance.
