Library Card

  • Memberships with the Whitecourt & District Public Library are free for permanent residents of the Town of Whitecourt and permanent residents of Woodlands County. 
  • Individuals who will be residing in Whitecourt or Woodlands County for less than 1 year are considered temporary residents and are required to pay a refundable $25 deposit.
  • Individuals residing outside Whitecourt and Woodlands County will also be required to pay a refundable $25 deposit. The deposit is refundable when the Library card is returned, all outstanding items on the account are returned and there are no fines or fees on the customer’s account.
  • Library memberships are valid for 1 year. 

Obtaining a Library Membership

  • To obtain a Library membership, individuals must be at least 5 years of age.
  • Individuals 18 years of age or over are required to provide photo ID as well as proof of current residential address (Note: a P.O. box or General Delivery is not considered proof of residential address).
  • Acceptable forms of photo ID include: 
    • Valid drivers’ license 
    • Government issued photo health card 
    • Valid passport 
    • Valid photo student ID 
  • Acceptable forms of proof of current residential address include:
    • Valid drivers’ license
    • Utility bill (issued within the last 2 months)
    • Valid insurance document
    • Valid vehicle registration document
    • Rental lease agreement or receipt o Mortgage documents
    •  Mail received from a government agency (within the last 2 months)
  • Individuals between the ages of 5 and 17 are required to have a parent or legal guardian present when obtaining a Library membership. The parent or legal guardian is required to present photo ID and proof of residential address for themselves, on behalf of the minor under the age of 18. 

Renewing a Library Membership

  • Library memberships are valid for 1 year from issuance date or prior renewal date.
  • DO NOT discard your current Library card even if it has expired since it will cost $2 to replace the Library card.
  • To renew your Library membership, customers are required to present their existing Library card, verify the address, phone number, email address, etc. on file and an updated expiry date sticker will be attached to the existing Library card.
  • Before a Library membership can be renewed, all outstanding fines and fees must be paid off in full on the account.

Library Membership Responsibility

  • You are responsible for all items checked out on your account.
  • You are responsible for returning all items checked out on your account on or before the due date.
  • You are responsible for returning all items checked out on your account in the same condition as it was loaned to you.
  • You are responsible for paying all overdue fines and any fees for damaged, lost, destroyed, or non returned items on your account.
  • All fines and fees on your account must be paid off in full before any further circulation activities are allowed. 

Change of Address, Phone Number, Email Address, Name

If you have a change of address, phone number, email address, last name, etc., please notify the Library ASAP so we can update your account and continue to issue notifications to you. 

Lost or Stolen Library Cards

  • If your Library card is lost or stolen, please notify the Library immediately so we can place a block on your account to prevent someone else from using your account.
  • You are responsible for all items checked out on your account up to the date and time we are notified of the lost or stolen Library card.
